HELADO NEGRO BARCOS

Although Helado Negro has been releasing music since 2012, he's only recently started getting the attention that he deserves, particularly with the release of the album This is How You Smile, which came out last year. Growing up in Florida to Ecuadorian parents, his music honours his heritage with use of both Spanish and English, as well as use of hispanic guitar styles. He's just released a couple of new instrumental tracks which really delve into the experimental world that he's previously touched on. 'Barcos', meaning 'boat' in Spanish is one of the new releases. Cinematic piano and eerie reverb swells like a giant wave, into some record scratching and theatrical French singing. The drums and krauty bass line dance around strange rhythms, whilst the electric guitar adds another layer of unexpected syncopation. The beat, along with the rest of the production, has a very lo-fi hip-hop quality; the kind that you find on a record that's been in a dusty basement since the mid 90's. About two thirds of the way through, the repetitive loopy section is taken over by a bass line with a strange, yet strong groove, and a beat that's been hollowed out like a ripe coconut.
